But when Alfred Lion started the label in 1939, recording boogie woogie pianists Meade Lux Lewis and Albert Ammons, his intention was simple: To release music that he felt was important. It is a mission that he never wavered from, nor have the Blue Note albums that have followed in his illustrious footsteps. There have been many jazz labels as diverse and musically satisfying as Blue Note, but few have carried the same mystique as Alfred Lion's label, since they not only had the sound, they had the style. Like any label, it had its up and downs, but decades after its inception, the label remains beloved by almost all jazz aficionados. So, when the label's 60th anniversary rolled around in 19981999, it made sense that they decided to celebrate in grand style. The most storied label in jazz turns 80 this year. This became the first Blue Note LP to feature cover art from Reid Miles, whose crisp designs would become a symbol of the labels identity - and jazz at large. John Coltrane, Blue Train 1958. John Coltranes one and only recording for Blue Note is among his finest records. Perhaps the definitive document of the hard-bop era, this albums first tune, written by the pianist Bobby Timmons, sports a coolly delivered call-and-response melody, and Art Blakeys strong, stubborn swing feel underneath a parade of bristling solos.
