Short intro

Текст песни: You know mama told me now Youre a child on your way Dont you bother looking back At the steps you took Downs' Shake Away is easily the most polished and refined release since she released Ofrenda in 1994. By turns, it is also the most ambitious. Co-produced by Downs, longtime collaborators Paul Cohen, Brian Lynch, and Aneiro Taño, these 16 songs 13 plus three bonus cuts are a wild mix of cumbias, folks songs, rancheras, blues, and rock tunes that are originals and covers. Shake Away Spanish: Ojo de Culebra is the sixth studio album by Mexican singer-songwriter Lila Downs. It was released on 2 September 2008 on Manhattan Records. After attaining international success in 2001 with her first English record, Border, Downs wanted to release a fifth Spanish-English language project as its followup. In the vein of her earlier work, the album is heavily influenced by world music, flamenco and rock. Downs enlisted Paul Cohen as executive producer, also working with Celso. Album 2008 16 Songs. Released 2008. MexicanAmerican Lila Downs has one of those vocal styles that can only be described as an acquired taste. Generally dwelling in the lower, huskier regions of her range, she also has a habit of shooting off into high, squealing netherzones à la Peruvian diva Yma Sumac. This can be a bit disconcerting. Its the first time Downs has included a significant number of guest vocalists, who appear to tame her more excessive tendencies. The best is Argentinean legend Mercedes Sosa, dueting with her on the lovely Tierra de Luz. La Mari from Chambao puts a strong Spanish flavour on Ojo de Culebra. Shake Away is an odd album. In many ways, Downs has never sounded better - her voice veers between throaty soul reminiscent of Patti Smith and piercing Yma Sumac heights. Her embrace of her Mexican heritage has grown less intellectual, and her duets - with Cafe Tacuba's Ruben Albarran and Chambao's Mari, among others - spice the album nicely. And it's great to hear a Lucinda Williams cover in both Spanish and English. There's a lot to like, but sometimes you grow embarrassed for her clumsily overt lyrics, much as you might admire her championing of the mythical common. Lila Downs interview on new album.
