Short intro

Gloria is the first album by the Shadows of Knight, released in 1966 on Dunwich Records 666. The Shadows of Knight are primarily known for their hit version of the Van Morrison penned Them band's Gloria, but the band today is regarded as one of the original punk bands. The band's association with Gloria has caused some to miscategorize them as one-hit wonders. One reviewer points out that their first album, and its follow-up, Back Door Men, represent far greater diversity: The Gloria album. Although revisionist historians will claim that any Shadows of Knight best-of that includes Gloria will cover just about everything you'll ever need on this Chicago punk band and usually acting as if Van Morrison's and Them's original was the actual hit - wrong, true believers have long championed their two original albums for the Dunwich label . Gloria Knight's "We're Gonna Make It" is a brilliantly stripped-back, bass-heavy affair that peppers its killer groove with an highly infectious, bubbly sound-effect. The A-side features the warm and mature vocals by Ms. Knight, whereas the awesome, very dance floor friendly, 5:07 minute instrumental version is featured on the flip side.

"Today" was one-off collaboration between Kenton Nix, who was arguably one of the greatest post-disco producers (Taana Gardner - Heartbeat; Gwen McRae* - Funky Sensation / Have A Good Time), and Gloria Knight, who was an already very accomplished Soul / Gospel singer, and was maimed by polio according to the extended profile found on the backside of the record sleeve.

On the backside you can also find a wonderful, black and white image of Gloria appropriately titled “A Radiant Glo…”. It shows the artist in her full glory - think of 1960s glamour portraits such as The Supremes or The Ronettes - and you get the idea...

Too bad the record execs here decided on using another, really amateurish taken snapshot for the front-side of the picture cover. It really does not do any justice to Ms. Knight overall appearance. And what where they thinking when they added this horrible subtitle "Help Her To Help Herself"?! Well, talking about "tough love" here...

Anyway, if you ever get a chance, grab this record. It is really that good but also very rare...unfortunately...
