Bach's The Art of the Fugue, BWV 1080, was apparently his final work, breaking off unfinished in what would have been a monumental final section. It is written in open score, with no indication of instrumentation, which has given rise to various solutions: performances exist for organ, harpsichord, orchestra, small ensemble, and even piano, an instrument Bach is known to have encountered in his last years. But there is no recording like this one, which takes the open score as an invitation to realize the work with further creative effort, arrangement even. Accademia BizantinaDantone Decca. Andrew Clements. Thu 14 Dec 2017 GMT Last modified on Mon 3 Dec 2018 GMT. Its widely accepted now Bach really intended The Art of Fugue as a keyboard work, but Ottavio Dantone thinks otherwise. Some of the fugues, he writes, are impossible to play as written on a harpsichord. Instead, he opts for an ensemble of string quartet, harpsichord and organ, dividing the numbers between the instruments in a very skilful and effective way the use of the two keyboards together, for instance, is unexpectedly striking. Accademia Bizantina - Ottavio Dantone, Bagnacavallo. Ottavio Dantone, Bach - Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland Corale BWV 659. Album 2017 20 Songs. Johann Sebastian Bachs immensely complex exploration of the fugue was left incomplete at his death in 1750, but he still left 14 fugues and four canons, and theyve fascinated performers ever since. Much of the intrigue lies in the fact that Bach left no specified instrumentation, so its up to the musicians to decide on the forces theyll use. Ottavio Dantone opts for a period-instrument chamber orchestra and conjures up an authentic sound world that does this infinitely rewarding score great justice. Bach: The Art of Fugue Ottavio Dantone. The superb Daily Telegraph Accademia Bizantina and Ottavio Dantone present a refreshing new interpretation of Bach's The Art of Fugue. Performed on period instruments, the album features Dantone on harpsichord and conducting a reduced ensemble from Accademia Bizantina: a string quartet and organist. Together, they bring new life to this great masterpiece. Created with Sketch. Album: Bach, Sinfonia Accademia Bizantina, Dantone Decca. Show all 2. Like a sweet-toothed boy at a wedding breakfast buffet, harpsichordist and organist Ottavio Dantone has cherry-picked the most delicious instrumental movements from Bach's Cantatas. References to the Harpsichord and Brandenburg Concertos abound in Bach's church music, while less familiar material the intimate Adagio and Fugue from Cantata 152, for example is equally dazzling. Full of pomp and tenderness, and minus Lutheran angst, it's a guilty pleasure. Independent culture newsletter. Review: WTC By Ottavio Dantone Buy this album at: . Bach: Variazioni Goldberg BWV 988.
