Short intro

Anton Bruckner's String Quintet in F major, WAB 112 was composed in 187879 in Vienna. Bruckner's superior Joseph Hellmesberger, Sr. requested Bruckner for a string quartet. Instead of a string quartet, Bruckner composed a viola quintet, starting the composition in December 1878 and ended it on 12 July 1879. Bruckner dedicated the Quintet to Duke Max Emanuel of Bavaria. When looking at the score, Hellmesberger found the scherzo too challenging for the group to perform. String Quartet in C minor, WAB 111. Allegro moderato. Anton Bruckner. Hartmut Rohde, Leipziger Streichquartett, Hartmut Rohde. January 1, 2005. Bruckner: String Quintet in F Major & String Quartet in C Minor. Please retry. This has become my favorite recording of Bruckner's String Quintet. My previous favorite was the classic Vienna Philharmonic Quintet version on LondonDecca-which is itself wonderful in every way and there is nothing negative that can be said about it. The Fitzwilliam String Quartet, together with violist James Boyd of the London Haydn Quartet presents a historically informed performance of Bruckner's String Quintet and Quartet. This is the first recording to use gut strings a special set from Dan Larsen in Minnesota was obtained specially for this recording and original instruments at the correct pitch for the time. Upon hearing the performance The Bruckner Journal wrote: It was a revelation to hear Bruckner's quintet played on instruments with this gut string set-up appropriate to the time of its composition, and to hear it performed with a flexible lyricism that has become a rare thing in Bruckner performance
